Malaysia Sets Sights on Top 20 in Global Innovation Index

On November 5, 2025, The government of Malaysia has agreed to implement strategic measures to position the country among the world’s top 20 in the Global Innovation Index (GII), via more effective cross-agency governance and oversight.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, during the National Science Council meeting, noted that the GII serves as a key benchmark for assessing the nation’s level of innovation and global competitiveness. The meeting discussed reforms in funding mechanisms for Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) programmes to ensure more efficient delivery and greater impact.

He further stressed that mission-oriented R&D should not be conducted in isolation, but rather closely integrated with industry, society and policy to ensure that innovation truly benefits the people and strengthens Malaysia’s future.

At FOZL Group, we believe this target underscores Malaysia’s accelerated transition toward a high-tech nation.
