Certificate of Origin (COO)

A Certificate of Origin is an official document used to certify the country in which goods are grown, produced, or manufactured. It is typically required when exporting to specific countries, clearing customs upon request by the consignee, or when stipulated in formal agreements. The certificate verifies the origin of the goods and is issued by a government authority or an authorized agency, confirming that the products originate from a specific country.

1. Preferential Certificates of Origin (PCO)

Used to prove that a product is eligible for preferential treatment under a trade agreement, such as lower or no tariffs. Importers can use a PCO to claim preferential tariff rates. Exporters can apply for a PCO through the Ministry of International Trade and Industries (MITI).

2. Non-Preferential Certificates of Origin (NPCO)

Used to confirm the origin of products that are not eligible for preferential treatment under a trade agreement. NPCOs are used for general commerce objectives, such as customs clearance, compliance with import laws, or contractual requirements.
