New Zealand Commits to Boost Exports of Safe & Reliable Halal Meat to Malaysia

On October 28, 2025, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon pledged that New Zealand will enhance the export of halal-certified meat products to Malaysia, and keep its supply chains open. He stated, “We will use very transparent rules and resolve issues very quickly when they arise.”
The pledge followed the exchange of an upgraded Halal Implementing Arrangement (HIA) with Malaysia. Under the arrangement, New Zealand will support this effort through data-driven logistics and faster, cleaner clearance for high-trust operators. It also promises clearer, more consistent rules regarding registration, documentation, processing, labelling and storage for its halal industry participants. New Zealand added that it will focus on diversifying and growing its halal product range to Malaysia and leverage platforms such as the Malaysia International Halal Showcase 2026 to open new markets for businesses in both countries.
