China Remains Hamburg's Top Trading Partner, Highlighting Resilience of Europe-Asia Supply Chain

February 25, 2025 – China maintained its position as the top trading partner of Germany's Port of Hamburg in 2024, with container throughput reaching 2.2 million TEUs, a 0.7% year-on-year increase accounting for nearly 30% of the port's total volume. This performance underscores both the strength of China-Germany economic ties and Hamburg's crucial role as a resilient logistics hub connecting Europe and Asia.

Despite global geopolitical challenges and economic pressures in Germany, Hamburg achieved a 0.9% growth in total container handling to 7.8 million TEUs in 2024. China's 2.2 million TEUs significantly outpaced the second and third-ranked partners – the United States (690,000 TEUs) and Singapore (430,000 TEUs). Axel Mattern, CEO of Port of Hamburg Marketing, noted that despite headwinds, "key trading partners continue to rely on Hamburg as a dependable logistics hub, reinforcing its irreplaceable position in global supply chains."

As Europe's third-largest universal port and a critical intermodal hub, Hamburg strengthened its hinterland connections with 5.2 million TEUs handled through land transport networks. Rail transport accounted for over half of this volume, efficiently linking road, rail and inland waterway systems to provide stable logistics channels for Europe-Asia trade. The enduring China-Hamburg partnership not only demonstrates vibrant bilateral trade but also serves as a cornerstone for stabilizing EU-Asia industrial and supply chains – reflecting mutual market confidence and Hamburg's pivotal function as "Europe's Gateway."

This robust performance demonstrates the resilience and potential of China-Germany trade cooperation. Against rising global economic uncertainty, the growing trade between China and Hamburg provides both development momentum for the port and stable market support for German and European businesses. As Hamburg continues enhancing its logistics capabilities, bilateral trade cooperation is poised to deepen across broader sectors, writing new chapters of mutual benefit.
