Singapore, October 3, 2025 — On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, and Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan sent congratulatory letters to Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, and State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, extending their warm congratulations and best wishes.
In his letter to President Xi, President Tharman reflected on the development of bilateral relations, affirming the strong foundation of cooperation between the two countries. He noted that today’s close partnership is the result of the foresight and leadership of past generations. He highlighted the achievements made in education, trade, and cultural exchanges, and expressed confidence that both countries would continue to work closely to elevate relations to greater heights. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, in his letter to Premier Li, underscored the steady progress of bilateral projects over the past three decades, from the Suzhou Industrial Park to the Chongqing Connectivity Initiative, calling them exemplars of international cooperation. He expressed hope that both sides would further explore new opportunities in emerging fields.
In his letter to Vice Premier Ding, Deputy Prime Minister Gan emphasized the important role of the Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation and various council-level mechanisms, noting that digital economy and green development will be key focus areas in the next stage of cooperation. Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan wrote that the two countries share common interests in upholding multilateralism and advancing regional cooperation, and reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to working with China more closely on the international stage.
To mark the anniversary, the Chinese Embassy in Singapore organized a special photo exhibition showcasing 71 images that highlight significant milestones and achievements in bilateral relations since diplomatic ties were established. The exhibition not only revisits moments of state visits and landmark projects, but also captures the vibrancy of people-to-people exchanges and cultural interactions, reflecting the breadth and vitality of Singapore–China relations.
At this new historic juncture, both sides agreed on the need to deepen practical cooperation, strengthen collaboration in the Belt and Road Initiative, financial innovation, green development, and cultural exchange, as well as to enhance youth interaction and academic research partnerships, thereby injecting new momentum into regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
